Narrative and Medicine (BP410)
Culture,
Narrative and Medicine (BP 410) is a new Bioethics & Professionalism
elective offered through the Neiswanger Institute of Bioethics and Health
Policy for January 2008. The course will be directed by Dr. Ruby Roy. It
will meet on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 5:00 on January 8, 15, 22 and 29 and will accept
up to 10 medical students.
We will use
poetry, short stories and novel-length narratives as a vehicle to reflect on
questions of cultural identity, the culture of medicine, and the
difficulties cultural differences can cause in communication and medical
care. There will be both reading and writing assignments weekly.
The course
qualifies for one week of credit given in the fourth year. (You may not use an elective to decrease time spent in a
required course or rotation).
Registration
forms are available through the office of the Registrar, and can be signed
by the Neiswanger Institute (SSOM 280). You may refer to the Elective Course
Catalogue for a more complete course description.
