United States
Presenter: Haynes Johnson
Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist, a best selling author, and a
television commentator. Until recently Johnson was associated with
the Washington Post -- which he joined in 1969 -- where he served
as a national reporter, assistant managing editor, and as a national
affairs columnist. He appears regularly on the PBS-TV program
Washington Week in Review and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.
Haynes Johnson is the author of eleven books, including three
national bestsellers. He authored (with David Broder) The System, a
detailed account of the political turmoil that surrounded and
ultimately derailed the effort of the Clinton
administration to pass
comprehensive health care reform.

Poverty & HIV:
Experiences from Haiti to Rwanda
Presenter: Joia Mukherjee, MD, MPH
Since 1999, Dr. Mukherjee has served as the Medical Director
for Partners In Health working with programs in Haiti, Peru, and
Russia focusing on HIV and TB. She is a consultant for the WHO
on MDR-TB and a faculty member of Harvard Medical School.

Camp Heartlands Journey of Hope
Camp Heartlands Journey of Hope is an AIDS awareness
program that offers audience members the opportunity meet
young people who are impacted by HIV/AIDS. Camp Heartland
campers and counselors share their stories about the struggles
of living with a disease that threatens their lives, their
experiences of going public in their communities and their
hopes for the future. Presented in conjunction with PHR and

"African American Perspectives on Healthcare,"
presented by Glen Ellis, Sr., Strategies for Well- Being LLC. Glenn Ellis, a health educator and health
care consultant,
will examine the relationship of African Americans to the
health- care system in the United States. He will examine the
historical underpinnings of a "legacy of mistrust" that
pervades many clinical encounters. He will outline steps that
can be taken to ameliorate these barriers and help to reduce
health disparities.

and ethnic disparities in health care: Physician
role and professional obligation"
Brought to you by the Loyola-AMSA Health Disparities Task Force,
Neiswanger Institute, and the AMA Loyola Student
Chapter Arthur Elster, MD, Director, Division of Medicine &
Public Health at the American Medical Association, will present
a 22-minute DVD on taped interviews with minority doctors,
nurses, and patients on their experiences with the health care
system. He will also discuss racial and ethnic health disparities
and how physicians and medical students can address them in
their own practices. Dr. Elster recommends watching a 5
minute online video on health care disparities (see link below)
before coming to his presentation and remember to bring
